Research Goals
Define the survey purpose

As part of the product and design team at Centiment, I contributed to the redesign of the Research Goals feature, a step in the survey creation flow where researchers define what they want to learn from their survey. My role focused on organising the redesigned flows, componentizing the UI, and preparing everything for a clean developer handoff.
My role: UX/UI Designer · Flow organisation, componentization, dev handoff
Context of the Project
Research Goals is a feature that allows survey creators to input their research intent, what they want to learn, and from whom. This information acts as a brief for the AI assistant, directly improving the quality of generated questions and answer choices. When used well, it makes the entire survey smarter.
Users input two things: what they want to find out, and who they are surveying
The AI uses these inputs to synthesise a cohesive research goal statement
That statement then informs AI-powered features like question generation and answer suggestions
What was the problem?
Users weren't understanding what Research Goals were or why they mattered. The concept felt abstract, and without clear guidance, many skipped it entirely, which weakened the AI assistant's output downstream. The design team identified this as a clarity and onboarding problem and took it back to redesign.

Challenges
The core challenge was making an abstract concept of "define your research intent" feel concrete and approachable for users who just want to build a survey quickly. The redesigned flow needed to guide users step by step without feeling like extra work, while also handling edge cases like going back to revise answers and re-triggering the AI synthesis.

Design Solution
The redesigned Research Goals experience was structured as a short guided flow, broken into clear steps:
STEP 1 - The intro: Explains what Research Goals are and why they help, setting expectations before asking for input
STEP 2 A - The inputs: Two questions with placeholder text guiding users on how to answer correctly
STEP 2 B - Inputs filled: Once answered, the Continue CTA is enabled, and the user can proceed
STEP 3 - Review & edit: The AI synthesises a goal statement from both answers. The user can review and edit this text directly as well
or
STEP 4 - Go back: If the result isn't right, the user returns to Step 2 to revise and trigger a new synthesis
My contributions
Once the design direction was defined by the team, I took ownership of organising all the flow files and states (including edge cases) in Figma, componentizing the UI elements for consistency and handoff readiness, and preparing the full developer documentation.

Outcomes
The redesigned Research Goals flow replaced an abstract, underused feature with a clear, guided experience. By explaining the "why" upfront and structuring input as two simple questions, the redesign made it easier for researchers to engage with the feature — and in turn, get more relevant output from the AI assistant throughout their survey.
