Branding & Visual Customisation

At Centiment I was the lead designer for Themes, the feature researchers use to brand their surveys. The old version had grown without structure and was hard to use and hard for engineers to maintain. I redesigned it end to end, from the first flows to the shipped UI.
My role: Lead UX/UI Designer · Flows, componentization, prototyping, dev handoff & QA
Context of the Project
The Themes feature allows users to style their surveys, but the original iteration presented significant challenges that necessitated a full rethink. This project was established to reimagine the customisation experience, providing a more intuitive, structured, and visually modern way for users to brand their surveys.

Challenges
Reducing Complexity: The previous iteration was overwhelming for users; the new design needed to offer a structured yet flexible set of options.
Maintaining Visual Integrity: Ensuring that every question type remained usable and clear regardless of the user's colour or background choices.
Technical Scalability: Moving away from the "organic" growth of the past toward a system that was easier for the engineering team to maintain.
Research and Investigation
I investigated the core styling needs of our users to define the "must-have" customisation options. This research focused on balancing brand identity with functional clarity:
Colour Logic: Identifying the essential variables: text, accent, button text, and background colours.
Branding Elements: Defining how logos and background images should behave within the survey layout.
Typography & Assets: Defining how custom fonts, logos, and background images should behave within the survey layout.
Stress Testing: I conducted extensive testing to observe how every question type reacted to various colour palettes and background imagery to ensure consistent legibility.
Flows and Componentization
I designed two distinct flows to ensure themes were accessible both during the creation phase and for global management:
Survey Builder Theme Picker: an integrated preview experience where users can select and test themes in real-time while building their questions.
Dashboard Theme Management and Editor: a centralised hub for managing "My Themes," "Organisation" themes, and a "Gallery" of predefined templates.

Design Solution
The final solution provides a streamlined branding experience that prioritises both creator flexibility and respondent ease of use:
Defined Customisation: Users can now modify text, accent, and background colours, and upload logos or background images within a simplified interface.
Theme Libraries: Organised the experience into three tiers: a Gallery for quick selection, Organisation themes for team consistency, and Private themes for individual use.
Visual Validation: While users are responsible for final contrast choices, the system was built upon rigorous testing of colour/background interactions across all question components.
Survey-Specific Scope: Themes are applied on a per-survey basis, preventing global changes from accidentally affecting separate research projects.

Outcomes
The redesigned Themes feature successfully replaced a fragmented legacy tool with a professional branding engine. Shipped in 2026 as part of the survey builder.
